Light winds, sunny skies and warm temperatures made for a perfect setting for the Barbara Stuart Memorial Regatta on July 23. Four boats competed this year including the returning champions, Annie Stockton and Sandy Whitmore. They were challenged by Susan Willis and Mary Fitzgerald sailing Mako, Laura Smit and Ellie Workman representing the high school sailing program in Tantalus, and Linda Koran and Susan Strobel sailing Mari.
Laura and Ellie made a great challenge by nailing the starts and sailing fast, but they couldnt match the pointing ability of Annie and Sandy, who also got some great starts. Annie and Sandy won the first two races decisively, but Laura and Ellie came back to take the third. The forth was close, but Annie and Sandy took it. With a dying breeze, a fifth race sent the fleet back home with a finish at the marina. Annie and Sandy put the exclamation point on their victory with a run away win that had the committee boat scrambling to set up a finish line before they got there.
Overall, everyone had a great time, there were no protests and lots of happy chatter between the boats. Thanks to Andris Kleinberg, his son Dainis and his grandson Zach for helping me out on the committee boat. Pictures by Dainis are posted on the web site.
