The S-t-S Needs Help

Starting the new year, we need new material. We particularly need Toliva Race photos.

I get to read other club’s newsletters. They are sent to SSSS and some times the Secretary gives them to me. The S-t-S compares well. I think it is better than even those of clubs with much more money, the Club can be proud of it. Sometimes it goes to my head, until I remember how small my part of that is.

I mean ... well it is not like the other editors are saying: “Pull that cruising story so we can reprint something from Chapman.” Or, “I do not like the photo of boats rounding the mark; use the clip art thing with an anchor instead.” They did not print a photo because they did not have a photo to print. Their members did not send them one. They have no cruising story to pull, because none of their members wrote one.

As we start another year I need your help again. Our officers will keep us up to date on Club events. We rely on our Members, you, to make this rag something we can be proud of.

We need current photos of SSSS events. We have many videos of the races this summer. Those are good, but I need photos to print. Thera will need photos for next year’s calender too. She said she had less to chose from this year than past. Take your camera sailing and send us copies.

Where did you take your boat this summer? Racing somewhere other than Budd Inlet? Alaska? The San Juans? Maybe you discovered some of the places to cruise in the South Sound? Or maybe you had adventures in the boat yard? What happened? What did you learn? We want to hear from you. The Member survey told us that letters from other Members is considered the best part of the S-t-S.

We are counting on you, our Members. E-mail me your stories and photos.

Last thought: Nothing in the above should make you think we do not want videos. We are getting a lot of videos. We would like more. I am confident people like them. The way we are dealing with the formatting problems is to up load the video to a site like youtube or flickr, Then sending me the link to post.

This also works for still photos, posting them elsewhere and sending me the link. But when choosing a site to post on, please pick one that is open to the public. One where you do not have to register and accept lots of third party tracking cookies. We do not want to make our Members join every photo site on the web just to see other Members’ photos.

May 2011

As the SSSS year ends, it is time to thank those who put out the S-t-S this year. I am writing this a month early this year because we have space now and there is usually a lot to get in the June S-t-S. The numbers may well go up a little at the end of the year, I will post an update count in June. But it pretty much is what it is.

I want to thank the “talent”, starting with the 37 people who wrote for us this year: those who wrote about a SSSS event they were involved with and those who wrote us about their sailing adventures. I want to thank the 25 people who gave us the photos we printed, as well as those whose photos are on the web. If you like what you see and read, and many of you have told me you do, these are the people responsible. Too many people to list here; their names appear on their work. We thank you.

I also want to thank the mailing crew: the regulars, Thom Abbott, the Bergholzs, Jim Findley, the Hansens, the Marrs, Rod Tharp, Don Waterhouse, Thera Black, and everyone who came out to fold and label your S-t-S. We had 14 people come fold one month!

We rely on our Secretary, Sandi Whitmore, to prepare the labels and maintain our data base. She also helps fold. If not for the mailing crew, you not would receive the S-t-S. Thank you.
And thanks to Fish Brewery for always holding a table for us to work on.

In total, over 70 people worked to bring you the S-t-S this year. It takes that many, and more, to reflect a club as large and diverse as ours. I want to say, thank you to all. I think we have produced a newsletter the Club can be proud of. Hopefully everyone will be back again next year, and we will do even better.

Lastly I want to thank those who ran paid ads in the S-t-S. We appreciate the support. If you are in the market for something they do, I encourage you to give them a chance to earn your business.

As we are finishing one year another year is starting. Please do not quit sending me photos of SSSS events. I will post them as I get them, and have photos to print come fall. Take your camera sailing; send us copies. And as you go on your summer adventure, be it a cruise to Alaska or the San Juans or Race Week, write about it for us. E-mail me as you go and I will post it to be followed by those of us stuck in town. Maybe take a photo or two. Or write about it after you are back. It can be fun to relive the trip on paper. Either way, we would like to hear about it.

It is you, our Members, who make this rag interesting. We want to hear from you.

Ways to Help with the S-t-S

Photos :

are always needed. More so as we can scan them for the net. I’m counting on you to take new ones for us : Member’s boats and Members at SSSS events. Be warned, I can not promise to return those used. See the S-t-S Style Sheet for more details on what I need. Give them to me at the Meeting, or mail them.

Letters :

keep the S-t-S interesting. We want to hear about your cruise, be it to Desolation Sound, Port Townsend, or Tierra Del Fuego. Any opinions on SSSS, or some other marine related topic, that you want to air? . For information on style, formatting, and conventions, see the S-t-S Style Sheet. Write it up and get it to me.

Stringers :

I need help keeping track of what is going on. What are other Olympia marine organizations up to? Tell me so I can keep our Members informed. I would like to give everyone who goes North to race credit, but I am having trouble keeping track other clubs’ race results. Call me if you can help.

Mailing Crew :

the Thursday before the S-t-Ss are mailed we meet to fold and address them. We have been meeting at the Fish Bowl. We will continue to do so until we go somewhere else. It usually does not take very long and you get your S-t-S early. We can always use more help. Let me know if you want to help and I will call you for the next mailing.
