Death of a Sailor: Clarence Gadley

Clarence passed away on Monday, August 25, 2008. Clarence and his wife Anne Matthews were both long time Members of SSSS and OYC. They owned, raced, and cruised aboard Lars Jensen, a Contrast 36. Clarence and Anne purchased their boat in 1984. Anne thought she was going to Seattle to get a new fur coat. Instead, they went to the Seattle Boat Show and purchased a sailboat! Clarence served SSSS as Vice Commodore, Cruise Chair, and Fleet Captain. He was the PHRF Representative for OYC for many years. He raced with Barney Richmond on Long Shot, another Contrast 36, in a successful campaign to bring home the PIYA Key City Trophy. Clarence and Anne cruised with SSSS Cruisers locally, and up North in the San Juan Islands, Gulf Islands, Barkley Sound, and Desolation Sound. Clarence and Anne enjoyed several Moorings bareboat cruises with other SSSS Members in the Caribbean and Tahitian Islands.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to Clarence’s preferred charitable organization: Arthritis Foundation, Pacific Northwest Chapter, 3876 Bridge Way N. #300, Seattle, WA 98103
