Portsmouth Racing

September 2008 Article

At the June meeting I received the Sportsmanship Award. As some of you may have noticed over the years, I am a man of few words, but that June night I was a man of no words. I was literally speechless. I hope I didn’t offend anybody by not giving my profound thank yous right then, but, again I was speechless. Now I’ve recovered enough to at least write thank you all. I do really appreciate this award. It means a lot to me.

Having said that, all of you know how this Club works. I could never have done the stuff Thera claimed I did without help. Of course Bill Brosius is first on the list. He’s the one that found the derelict docks and spent three days towing them from Zittles to West Bay Marina. Next is my hearty crew of committee boat personnel. Rob Nelson, Eric Egge, and Joice Mercuri. Also Kevin French and his nephew, Brenden. And of course the whole Small Boat Fleet. What a great bunch of people.

This was a great summer for the small boat fleet. Jean Gosse lost her title as the person coming the farthest. Dennis Krumm brought his Flying Dutchman all the way from Marysville to race with us! In the first part of the summer we had several kids from the high school sailboat racing team come out and join us. It was fun to see the new faces. Attention all you PHRF racers. There’s some great crew possibilities there.

Dock at Westbay

We now have a functioning small boat dock at Westbay Marina. It is 18 ft. x 48 ft. with a concrete surface. There are two boats already on the dock. This is a first come first served offer. Remember, this dock is only for boats that are racing only. This is not a dinghy storage dock.

Each boat owner is responsible for his or her strip of dock. You need to at least put down rug over the concrete, although some sort of rack is better. Come on down and have a look at what the others have done. The dock is in the north east corner of the marina. Please keep the boats close together to leave room for others.

The cost to keep your boat at Westbay Marina is $15/month paid to Westbay Marina. At this time there is no additional cost to keep your boat on the concrete dock. We do, however, expect you to pay us back in “sweat equity”. Leave the dock cleaner than when you got there. If you see something that needs maintenance, either fix it yourself or find someone that can. This is our dock, you and me, not Their dock. We take care of it, not Them.

Jim Findley

Thanks for the dock goes to Jim Findley who responded to requests for one and organized the project. Not to mention Bill Brosius who found the segments scrapped and, with Jim, delivered them to Westbay. They both put up the front money to get them there, a grand. Thanks is also due the South Sound Sailing Society who picked up the bill. And we also want to thank those who worked to tie the segments together into the dock we want.
