The 1974 Annual Banquet : Reprint from November 1974 S-t-S

The new year is a time for thinking about the passage of time : the future and the past. Wonder what was doing at SSSS twenty years ago? Here are some of the SSSS highlights from the year Nixon resigned. This is reprinted from the November 1974 S-t-S.

LAZARETTE
Those of you who were unable to attend the Annual Banquet missed a good dinner and an excellent program. In short, a fun evening. And those of you who said “count me in” but didn’t show are going to get coal in your stockings this Christmas!
The evening’s program went as follows :

1) Charlie McCann, in his own inimitable way, discussed his and Barbara’s trip around Vancouver Island this past summer, using charts to illustrate their cruise and his descriptions. It’s certainly not a voyage for the inexperienced!

2) Mike Stewart presented two cruising awards: The first one, to be a perpetual trophy , went to Sam and Shirley Reed who spent in excess of 100 days on their boat this year and whose quiet heroism and self involvement undoubtedly saved the lives of several. The second “trophy,” a toy sailboat listing on a mound of sand, went to Bob and Patty Freested for their attempt to sail across Smith Island . . .

3) Bob Alexander, owner/skipper of the Scaramouche, entertained us next with his experiences on the Victoria-to-Maui Race. Bob used carefully drawn charts to show his course and to illustrate wind, current and sail changes. He finished with a brief but poignant series of slides which expressed, better than words, the trials and rewards of an oceanic race!

4) Bob was then presented with the Governor’s Trophy for being First to Finish in the 1974 Toliva Shoal Race. The First Overall trophies for IOR and PHRF classes racing Toliva Shoal were also presented.

5) Gary Burk called up all winners of each series and regatta and presented them with their awards.
That concluded the formal program and everyone dispersed to do a little dancing and/or sipping.

. See You Sailing, P. Byrd
