Letters : Poets Cove, Bedwell Harbour, South Pender Island, B.C

There’s something about Poets Cove that makes you smile. Perhaps it’s the picture of swash-buckling pirates, or crafty rum runners that you conjure up in your mind when you hear the name. Whatever it is, one thing is certain: Nestled below the tree-lined bluffs of Mount Norman, this marina provides more than merely a place to clear Canadian Customs, fuel up at the accessible fuel dock, or tuck-in to escape foul weather. The scenery is breath-taking; the staff is warm and welcoming. Something about this port is indefinable and compelling.

You’ll definitely want to launch the kayak or tender and explore hidden coves and bays along the coastline. If you long for solitude, venture to the very end of South Pender Island to a pebble-covered beach known as Gowlland Point Park, a perfect place to chill out.

Whether anchored or moored to buoys in Beaumont Marine Park, you should make a point to dinghy over to the marina for a pleasant hike, bike ride, relaxing meal or, just to investigate the time-share vacation-home real estate.

This cruising destination has come a long way from its modest beginnings and roughhewn post office. Now, the simple wooden docks lead to a new, luxurious and sophisticated resort replete with world-class amenities: heated swimming pool, hot tub, super laundry room, great showers, market, restaurants and spa.

The compact Moorings Market offers an opportunity to restock, replace your reading material, pick up a gift or two, or buy sandwiches and ice cream, a place you’re likely to bump into fellow boaters and swap sea stories.

At the Poets Cove Resort and Spa you can choose between the elegant ambience of the Aurora restaurant with its tempting contemporary menu, or the more casual setting of the Syrens Lounge that offers classic comfort food and a local brew indoors or on the terrace. The lounge rocks during happy hour. Whichever eatery you choose you’ll find the service efficient and friendly, the food wonderful, the view exquisite. Suggestion: Make reservations if you plan on dining at Aurora. It is a favorite of locals as well as the marina and resort guests.

Wander through the Resort’s Susurrus Spa, absorbing the aura. For the more adventurous there are excitingly mysterious experiences : the Steam Cave, the Vichy Shower, the Sea Clay Massage and more.

During the summer Bedwell Harbour is a popular port of entry and very busy. Suggest you call ahead to reserve a spot.

Poets Cove beckons. You’ll remember it as one of the many beautiful Gulf Island destinations you eagerly anticipate visiting again.
