South Sound Sailing Society Ship-to-Shore : April and May 1996

Letters : New Life Members

Letters : Life Members : April 1996
Dear John Sherman, Commodore,

Speaking of Life Members, I think it’s about time we recognize one of the Society’s first members. She embodies all the qualities that we admire. She is friendly and helpful to new-comers. She sails her boat all year long. There isn’t a sailor in South Sound that hasn’t seen her transom during a race. Her boat is at almost every Society function. She puts up with one of the sternest taskmasters around. Yes, that’s right, I’m talking about Betty Hansen. I would like to place the names of George and Betty Hansen in nomination for recognition as Life Members.

I think that they are what the Society is about and I think that this 25th anniversary year is a pretty good time to recognize all that they do for the Society and its members.

I hope that the Board will consider this matter at the next Board Meeting. I will be happy to attend and discuss this with the Board.

Societally Yours,
Bruce Campbell, Woodstock

Vice Commodore, PIYA : Corresponding Sec., PIYA

Commodore’s Corner : A Cause to Celebrate : May 1996

In accord with Article III.1.B of the Society’s Bylaws, and by unanimous recommendation of the Board and vote of the Membership, George and Betty Hansen were extended Life Membership at the April General Meeting in grateful appreciation for their countless contributions over 25 years to the South Sound Sailing Society.

As evidenced by the loud and lusty aye when the matter was put to a general vote, George & Betty are well-known and appreciated by SSSS Members. Their willingness to help the Society and its Members is legendary. They’ve helped maintain our race buoys, manufacture trophies for our awards, and provide sage, practical advice to all who seek their counsel and experience. A regular on the race course, every sailor has seen Vela’s transom at one time or another. Vela’s sweet lines grace many cruises, as well. And George & Betty unfailingly attend SSSS meetings and events where their energy and enthusiasm for the Society and its Members is infectious.

As one of the founding Members of SSSS 25 years ago, their love of sailing and the camaraderie it affords has deep roots. That they remain among the most active participants in SSSS activities today is true cause for inspiration and celebration. Over the years their gentle guiding hand on the tiller of the Society has helped steer SSSS to the success we all enjoy today.

Election to Life Membership is a small way for SSSS members to say “Thanks!” to George and Betty for their contributions and company over the years. And I’m sure all Members will join me in the hope that it will help insure their continued company in our next 25 years of sailing in the South Sound!

John Sherman, Grendel
