Around South America with Night Runner

Tierra Del Fuego : April 1996

After realizing what I got myself into, volunteering to help with the [Toliva] race, I thought it best if I left North America and went sailing! I joined Seattle based Night Runner in Puerto Williams (behind Cape Horn).

I met some true ‘Yagens’ thanks to the local Missionaries. This is the tribe that lit the fires along the beach that gave Tierra Del Fuego its name.

Tensions are obviously high between Chile and Argentina. Both called us frequently on the VHF, I think to let the other know they see us.

Gunk holing the Falklands was super. Lots of albatross and I got to meet Princess Ann!

We are off to Barbados — 5,000 miles.

Panama : June 1996

I am now at the conclusion of my voyage. I have sailed three of the four tips of South America, over 7,000 miles. The coast of Venezuela and Panama are a must for cruising. Los Roques and Los Testigos are mangrove covered. Atous, Bonaire, Curacao, and Aruba are barren but lovely diving and people. And the 365 San Blas Islands are exquisite.
DMA and British Admiralty charts are good, but lacking in detail for San Blas.

From hail squalls at 55 south to sunburned in the trades at 10 north, time to come home!
