SSSS Sailor Wins National Title

Mike Visser of Olympia, Dalton Bergan of Kirkland, and Kevin Oliverio of Portland represented Area H, the Pacific NW, at the USSA/Rolex Junior Championships in South Carolina, racing for the Sears Cup.

This is the final regatta in the national youth championship. You have to win in your Area to go. Actually it’s three competitions. The Smyth and Bemis Cups are for the single and double handed dinghies and the Sears Cup is for the three man keelboat. The Sears Cup is the oldest of the three by fifty years, dating from 1921. This year it was sailed in J 22s.

They won going away! With six firsts, a second, a third, and a fourth they did not even sail the last race! This is only the third time someone from our Area has won a Sears Cup! Alan Hoylt, CYC, did in 1956 and Royal Vancouver YC in 1960.

On behalf of the Club, and myself, let me say, Congratulations Mike, one third of the USSA Junior Championship crew. Well done, very well done.

Steve Worcester, Sugar Magnolia.
