Letters : Vashon Challenge

If you are looking for a fun sailing activity next summer, try the Vashon Challenge Race around Vashon Island. This race is for single or double handing, so you do not have to sweat getting a big crew together. In fact there were lots of mom and pop crews out there. It is run by CYC of Tacoma in August. This year 35 boats started, of which 24 finished.

The fun started with an informal Friday night hamburger feed at CYCT, in the marina parking lot. The Race followed on Saturday. It begun and ended at Browns Point, which is a short commute to the marina where free moorage was provided.

The Race itself began in very light air, after being postponed. A nice northerly kicked in about half way up Colvos. That gave us a good beat and an exciting run. SSSS was represented by Uproar and Miss Conduct. We finished seconds apart after sailing together since the south end of the Island. Ian did a terrific job as usual, winning his class and taking second overall. Steve Worcester and I took a second in our class and fourth overall.

We all had a great time and heartily recommend it to our Members next summer.

Erik Dahl, Miss Conduct
