In the Begining

If you can get your hands on a copy of the October 1967 Sea magazine and turn to the “The Readers Signal Sea”, the letters section, you will see the following:

Mixed Sailing in Olympia

I am trying to find a way to handicap boats of both monohull and multihull construction so that both can enter the same race. I am interested in handicapping for boats under 26' or at the most, less than 40'.

I intend to start a cup race of some kind in the Olympia area that most yachtsmen could enter. The course I have in mind would cover approximately 30 miles.

I would appreciate hearing from other yachting groups which have faced a similar problem.

And so started a chain of events that, three years and a couple of months later, led to the formation of the SSSS. That happened in January 1971.

We have come a long way in the last 34 years. The club has really grown. Now we have many more people grousing about handicapping and those multihulls.
