SUMMARY:General Meeting- May: Restoration of the Deschutes Estuary
DESCRIPTION:Restoration of the Deschutes Estuary \nFor longtime residents of Olympia\, the question of whether to remove the Fifth Avenue Bridge and restore the historic estuary of the Deschutes River has been the subject of ongoing debate. Many people were reluctant to lose the picturesque reflecting lake\, which was a key element of the Capital’s original design. Others\, however\, were concerned about persistent water quality issues and envisioned the return of a vibrant estuary\, providing improved habitat for fish\, birds\, and other wildlife. Ultimately\, the State of Washington decided to remove the dam and begin restoration of the estuary. \nThe Department of Ecology\, serving as the lead agency for the project\, will present detailed plans for removing the dam and constructing a new bridge that will connect Westside and downtown Olympia. The agency will also discuss the design and development of the estuary’s banks and river channels. Additionally\, they will share strategies for managing sediment flow into lower Budd Inlet\, both in the short and long term\, to minimize impacts on the Olympia Yacht Club and marinas near Percival Landing. The presentation will conclude with anticipated improvements to water quality in lower Budd Inlet. \nThe SSSS General Meeting will take place on May 19 at the Olympia Yacht Club. There will not be any pre-meeting sessions; doors will open at 6:45 PM and the meeting will start promptly at 7:00 PM. Free parking is available in the lot south of the fenced OYC parking area. \nAll are welcome to attend. Bring your significant other\, neighbor\, crew\, or anyone interested in Olympia’s future to join the discussion.
