SUMMARY:General Meeting- May: Restoration of the Deschutes Estuary
DESCRIPTION:Restoration of the Deschutes Estuary \nFor longtime residents of Olympia\, the question of whether to remove the Fifth Avenue Bridge and restore the historic estuary of the Deschutes River has been the subject of ongoing debate. Many people were reluctant to lose the picturesque reflecting lake\, which was a key element of the Capital’s original design. Others\, however\, were concerned about persistent water quality issues and envisioned the return of a vibrant estuary\, providing improved habitat for fish\, birds\, and other wildlife. Ultimately\, the State of Washington decided to remove the dam and begin restoration of the estuary. \nThe Department of Ecology\, serving as the lead agency for the project\, will present detailed plans for removing the dam and constructing a new bridge that will connect Westside and downtown Olympia. The agency will also discuss the design and development of the estuary’s banks and river channels. Additionally\, they will share strategies for managing sediment flow into lower Budd Inlet\, both in the short and long term\, to minimize impacts on the Olympia Yacht Club and marinas near Percival Landing. The presentation will conclude with anticipated improvements to water quality in lower Budd Inlet. \nThe SSSS General Meeting will take place on May 19 at the Olympia Yacht Club. There will not be any pre-meeting sessions; doors will open at 6:45 PM and the meeting will start promptly at 7:00 PM. Free parking is available in the lot south of the fenced OYC parking area. \nAll are welcome to attend. Bring your significant other\, neighbor\, crew\, or anyone interested in Olympia’s future to join the discussion.

Or\, get your boat prepared for summer evening races! \nOur April 21 SSSS meeting will be designed to share cruising information based on where you want to go or prepare you for summer evening dinghy\, Stars\, and PHRF buoy races.  We will have round-table discussions with our members who have years of experience heading north to Alaska; who understand the best ways to get to and wander through the San Juan Islands; have circumnavigated Vancouver Island; and visited the Broughtons. SUMMARY:SSSS Cruise - Jarrel Cove
DESCRIPTION:Join us March 28–29 for the first cruise of the 2026 season to Jarrell Cove State Park\, located at the north end of Harstine Island. Jarrell Cove is a favorite early-season destination\, offering protected moorage\, quiet beaches\, forested trails\, and easy access by both boat and car. It’s also our teen daughter’s favorite location because the cove is calm enough for paddling and exploring with a dinghy. \nThe park provides twelve mooring buoys and dock space for boats 45 ft and under with power on a first-come basis. There is water available near the camp showers\, year-round pump-out service\, and toilet facilities available. Campsites are also available for those arriving by land. Once ashore\, enjoy beach walks\, forest trails\, and great company!  \nApproach to the cove is straightforward via Case Inlet. Please keep in mind that the Harstine Island Bridge in Pickering Passage has limited clearance and is not suitable for most sailboats. \nCruise hosts Dave and Aimee Opincarne\, aboard Cascadian Dream\, will be monitoring VHF channels 9\, 16\, and 72—give us a hail when you arrive.  \nPlanned activities for Saturday include a ranger guided park tour beginning at 1500\, followed by a social hour at 1700 and a group potluck dinner at 1800. In 2021\, Jeff bought a Jeanneau 49DS in Chicago with a plan to sail from the Great Lakes to the Caribbean\, then—over four to five years—through the Panama Canal and on to Washington via Hawaii. As he’ll tell you\, even the best plans take unexpected turns… \nJeff will share stories from his journey out of the Great Lakes\, through more than 100 locks\, down the Hudson River to New York City\, and “down east” to New England while dodging a hurricane. The following year\, he headed south to the Chesapeake\, visiting Washington DC\, Annapolis\, Baltimore\, and Philadelphia. In 2026\, he hopes to reach Boston for the 250th Independence Day celebrations before continuing north to Maine and Nova Scotia. \nJeff is the President of South Sound Honda Suzuki Polaris\, a graduate of Aberdeen High School\, and an experienced adventurer. \nBefore the main meeting\, our round‑table discussions will feature local marine vendors offering advice and services to help you prepare for the summer sailing season. DESCRIPTION:Our February SSSS meeting will feature Captain Michael Edwards\, who is the Chief Mate on ferries in the  Washington State ferry system. He has been asked to share good stories about serving on a ferry boat\, including stormy weather\, rescuing individuals in the water\, navigating when sailboats are in the area\, and other stories he tells his family and friends.  He also will share the VHF channels ferry boat captains listen to\, letting us know ferry horn signals\, including five short blasts\, and who has the right of way when a sailboat and a ferry boat are on a collision course.  Captain Edwards has been with the Washington ferry system for seven years.  He also worked for the Western Towboat Company and Edison Chousest Offshore. \nIn addition\, we will have 3-4 pre-meeting skill and knowledge round-table sessions. It is co-hosted by SSSS and the Olympia Yacht Club.  \nToliva Shoal is a full weekend of events\, including the race itself.
